Afghan rifles come home

Weapons lost in a British defeat in Afghanistan 128 years ago have been brought home by British soldiers. Troops serving in Helmand province have been finding Victorian Martini-Henry rifles, lost in battle at Maiwand in July 1880 and have gained permission to bring them back to the UK.

The weapons are now very collectable; some soldiers have kept them as souvenirs, but some of the rifles have found their way into antiques shops, where they can sell for over £1,000 a piece. Experts say Afghanistan is a growing source of antique weapons.
